The Regional Deaf Services Counselor provides culturally and linguistically accessible mental health counseling for individuals who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind.
Mental Health Services Provided:
- Culturally affirmative counseling for those who view hearing loss as part of their cultural identity
- Mental health counseling for those who view hearing loss as a medical condition or impairment
- Communication access in American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign Language, Tactile, and Spoken English
- Hard of Hearing proficiency and DeafBlind awareness
- Individual and family therapy
- Telehealth sessions via videophone or Zoom
- Active listening, CBT reframing, psychoeducation, and use of sign language/gestures/dictation app support
- Information and referral to other agencies, when applicable
About the Counselor:
Dr. Cathee Wolford, Regional Deaf Services Coordinator/Counselor at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (HNNCSB), serves the Region Five area. She is proficient in American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign Language, Tactile, and Spoken English. As a lifetime user of hearing aids, Dr. Wolford has lived experience with hearing loss and is knowledgeable about technological supports. She has disability/hearing loss-related competence in mental health counseling and capitalizes on real-life experiences to recognize each person’s unique journey.
Eligibility Requirements:
Services are available for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind individuals in need of mental health counseling who reside in the Region Five service area.
