Engaging Autism: Working with Autistic Adolescents and Adults with a Late Autism Diagnosis
This training is to give an understanding of the struggles of a later diagnosis for Autism Spectrum Disorder. It will be geared towards working with adolescents and adults who were diagnosed later in their life. Often, the first question I ask an autistic person when we meet for therapy is “when were you first diagnosed.” Whatever their answer is, my response is, “and that is how long you were misunderstood.”
Training Objectives:
– Working with Adults to understand their Neurodiversity & how it plays into their mental health.
-Empowering Adolescents to understand their needs and move forward in their life choices as an Autistic individual.
-Ways to help parents and other family member support their Autistic family member, to even grieve the late diagnosis and how that impacted their lives.
-Practical understanding of what Autistic people really need and how to problem solve issues that they are facing.
-Envisioning autistic people to live their best life
-Helping Autistic individuals to understand themselves to achieve their goals and that they can do hard things.
