Music for Change: Utilizing Music as a Clinical Intervention

In this two-hour presentation, participants will learn the basic building blocks of how music can be an effective intervention tool and a creative way to explore issues, deepen understanding of barriers to progress, increase coping skills, and build rapport with our clients. The first hour will be dedicated to define and differentiate between music therapy interventions and music interventions. The second hour will focus on the following music interventions: songwriting, lyric/song discussion, music listening, and musical play. There will also be discussion of use of voice in the therapeutic setting.

Learning Objectives:

• To define and differentiate between music therapy interventions and music interventions
• To identify theoretical frameworks that support music interventions
• To learn music interventions that are applicable to various utilized theoretical frameworks, age groups, and goals
• To identify contraindications of use of music interventions
• To increase comfort and confidence level in utilizing music interventions

Nicole holds both a Bachelors of Music and a Masters of Science in Music Therapy, as well as a Masters of Social Work. As a board-certified Music Therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Nicole integrates traditional talk therapy with experiential therapies to create a safe and transformational place for clients to initiate, practice, and create change within their lives. She is trained in the psychological assessment tool, Circles of the Self, and is currently working toward becoming a Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM) fellow. Nicole also incorporates aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Existential Therapy, and Humanistic Therapy. Utilizing these various tools, Nicole hopes to assist those who are seeking a path to wholeness and wish to tap into their innate ability to heal and find balance.
