Solutions to nighttime fears surrounding scary awakenings are not found within the purchase of a new mattress, the sounds of waterfalls in the background, use of aromatherapy, and counting sheep. Effective sleep interventions are beyond the scope of what sleep hygiene can offer. Imagery Rehearsal Therapy combined with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies have proven to be useful in helping many individuals improve poor quality sleep while reducing the intensity and frequency of nightmares.

Participants in the upcoming trainings will learn how to deeply listen to their clients’ sleep struggles to in-turn help them effectively modify their sleep habits, develop more positive thoughts surrounding sleep, and have confidence in their ability to regain control of a sleep routine in the absence of overwhelming nightmares. Important topics such as medical conditions, biological factors, stimulus control, sleep restriction, imagery, and dream rehearsal will be discussed to inform effective treatment interventions.

The current webinar led by Dr. Lillian Gibson will provide mental health professionals best practices to assess and treat nightmares. Participants will learn how to apply treatment specific approaches to help clients achieve better sleep. The on-line training will use case vignettes to guide the presentation and uncover mistakes that can be made when effective approaches to improve sleep are not utilized.
